Cabinet Extends Commission on OBC Sub-Categorisation
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the tenure of the commission constituted under Article 340 of the Constitution to examine the issue of sub-categorisation within Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the Central List.
The commission’s term has been extended by six months beyond 31 July 2019, up to 31 January 2020.
Objective of Extension
The extension will enable the commission to:
- Conduct wider consultations with stakeholders
- Finalise and submit a comprehensive report on OBC sub-categorisation
The decision is aimed at ensuring a more detailed and inclusive assessment of the issue before policy recommendations are made.
