New Delhi, February 8: The Department of Geography, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), under the umbrella of Viksit Bharat initiative of Government of India, organised a lecture on “Effective use of Space-based products and Geospatial technology in Disaster Risk Reduction” by Dr. Brijendra Kumar Mishra, Consultant (GIS, Risk and Vulnerability Analysis), National Disaster Management Authority on 6 th February, 2024. The lecture was a vibrant reflection in response to the rich heritage and academic excellence that JMI has stood for over a century. The event was attended by distinguished guests, eminent faculty members and dedicated students all of whom gathered to honour the institution enduring commitment to education, research and community service.
Prof. Haroon Sajjad, the Head of the Department of Geography welcomed the guest speaker, faculty members and all the students. The session was chaired by Prof. Atiqur Rahman, Chief Proctor, JMI. Dr Brijendra Kumar Mishra while delivering his lecture emphasized on India’s vision of reducing the carbon footprint. He discussed upon the vulnerability profile of India with reference to various disasters by citing World Risk Index Report, 2022. It was then followed by the discussion on indigenous technologies which India has developed for disaster risk reduction. His core focus was on the recently developed technologies such as Drone Tech Solutions which offered cutting edge in hi-tech services in areas of survey, analytics and surveillance.
Dr Brijendra also highlighted GEO- INT technology which is a real time asset used for monitoring and tracking. The discussion also revolved around MapmyIndia, Mappls, IoT and their wide range of applications such as geospatial analysis, live traffic updates and live monitoring of disaster task force among many. The case study of Uttarakhand floods of 2021 was also cited. Towards the end of the lecture, he also accentuated the current developments on disaster management funds and discussed the nodal agencies at national, state and district level.
Prof. Haroon Sajjad, HoD, Department of Geography, delivered his Presidential remarks. The lecture was followed by an interactive discussion wherein Dr Brijendra interacted with Ph. D scholars and students of disaster management. Dr. Ghazal Salahuddin, Incharge – extension lectures and webinars conducted the programme and proposed a gracious vote of thanks. The lecture ended on a positive note.
