The Department of Economics, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) proudly launched its much-anticipated "Corporate Lecture Series” on August 24, 2024 in the model class room of the Department. The inaugural lecture titled "From Campus to Corporate" was delivered by Mr. Shubham Sahay, Senior Manager at Bizmetric (a Global IT company headquartered in Texas, US) and a distinguished alumnus of JMI's Department of Economics. Mr. Sahay, who also holds an MBA from Leeds Beckett University, UK, and has had an illustrious career with HP, Ericsson, and TCS, shared invaluable insights with the students, offering a roadmap for their transition from academia to the corporate world.
The corporate lecture series is aligned with NEP 2020 and renewed focus of the Vice Chancellor of JMI, Prof. Mohammad Shakeel for corporate placement and internship for the students of JMI.
Mr. Sahay highlighted the stark contrast between campus life and corporate environments, emphasizing that the application of economics in the real world is what truly matters. He urged students to focus on developing essential skills, staying informed about industry trends, and understanding both the structure of their chosen fields and the specific skills required to excel.
Analyzing the rapidly growing analytics industry, Mr. Sahay stressed the importance of technical proficiency in tools such as Excel, SQL, R, and Python, along with the need for strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. He also underscored the value of certifications and specialized courses, noting that while academic marks are important, the ability to display learning and continuously up skill is what sets candidates apart in the eyes of recruiters.
Mr. Sahay advised students to remain tuned to the realities of life, plan strategically, and actively seek opportunities, particularly through internships. He encouraged them to work on projects and case studies, showcasing their work to potential employers as a way to stand out. He also emphasized the significance of understanding corporate culture and the importance of continuous learning for career growth. Mr. Sahay ended his interaction by urging students to research well, utilize available resources, and build strong networks to navigate the complexities of the industry successfully.
Prof. Asheref Illiyan, Head, Department of Economics, welcomed the guest and students. In his opening remarks he underscored the importance of such interaction and announced to organize more such "Corporate Lecture Series," in future. Dr. Vasim Akram and Dr. Kashif Khan were the teacher coordinators of the event. Dr. Kashif Khan provided the introductory remarks, while Dr. Md Zakaria Siddiqui proposed the vote of thanks. The event was enthusiastically attended by Dr. Malik Nadeem and Mr. Aqib (faculty members of the MSc (BFA) program, along with students from M.A Economics, MSc BFA, and BA (Hons) Economics). Gaurav Chakraborty and Mohammad Abuzar served as the student coordinators for the event.
