Dr. Zakir Husain Library, Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) organised an Online Orientation Programme “Managing & Measuring Research: Using SCOPUS Effectively” on 29th June 2021. The programme was organised on Zoom Platform for students, research scholars and faculty members of JMI. Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, scientific journals, books, conference proceedings. Scopus has been subscribed by the library and a widely used resource among the various e-resources subscribed by the library.
The objectives of the Orientation Programme were as follows:
1. Understanding Research Issues
2. Scanning Research Workflow
3. Understanding Publishing Workflow
4. Journal Metrics and How to choose Journals
5. Live Demo on How to Use Scopus effectively
Dr. Tariq Ashraf, University Librarian begun the programme with briefing and background on Scopus and its importance for academic fraternity of the University. Dr. Tariq welcomed Mr. Vishal Gupta, Senior Customer Consultant working with Elsevier, who had presented on Scopus followed by live demonstration.Mr. Vishal started with the importance of research through research flow diagram.
The presentation covered the various facets of research including impact factor, h-index, research profile, collaborators, types of journals, APC, predatory journals, open access, copyrights, ORCID, funding, metrics and visibility of research.
He further attributed about the importance of peer reviewed contents in research and how an article goes through the rigorous process of peer review before publishing. He urged research scholars and faculty to avail various online courses being providedthrough the Elsevier platform to better equip themselves in changing research scenarios.The programme was well attended by about 300 participants and continued for 120 minutes including 20 minutes for Q&A session. Participants actively took benefit of Q&A session and raised questions out of their curiosity. Certificates will be provided to all the active participants.
Dr. Tariq Ashraf advised researchers to take advantage of all the resources which have been extended to their doorsteps through remote access facility during this challenging time. He further reiterated that a better literature review is the foundation of quality research which can be harnessed using Scopus.Dr. Zakir Husain Library has lined up many such orientations cum briefing programmes on different e- resources and research oriented topics in coming weeks.
