Since years, marriage has been deemed sacrosanct in Indian society and any relationship outside the holy bond of matrimony is an unacceptable act. Even so, that does not stop people from cheating on their partners or having extramarital affairs.
About 55% of married Indians have been unfaithful to their partner at least once, out of which, 41% practice adultery on a regular basis, according to the latest survey by Gleeden.
Gleeden is the first portal for extramarital encounters in Europe made by women with over 6.6 million members, of which over 250,000 in the UK – which reveals what really happens behind the closed doors of Indian couples and breaks the taboo about women Infidelity.
According to this survey, the majority of the population who confessed to cheating on their spouse are women (56%). Conversely, while in India adultery is a usual practice, the British Indian Community results in less acceptance towards infidelity with only 33% of them admitting adultery at some point during their marriage.
Further, the survey displayed the open-minded point of view where the Indians said it is possible to be in love with two people at the same time. 46% of the surveyed people in India believe that one can cheat on a person while still being in love with them. This is probably why Indians are ready to forgive their partners in case they found out about the affair—40% of married couples in India are ready to forgive their spouse and 69% of them expect to be forgiven by their partner.
Contrarily, Indians living in the UK showed a strong sway towards adultery, especially against women. Almost 80% depicted a discriminating behavior against women for cheating considering their actions immoral. Similarly, males are negatively judged, even though at a lower level (26%).
Gleeden, which has over 8 lake’s users in India, revealed that this research was conducted among 1,525 Indian married individuals between the age of 25 and 50, across Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
Speaking about the survey, Ms. Sybil Shiddell, spokesperson for Gleeden in both India and the UK, states that “You would expect the Indian community in the UK to be more tolerant of infidelity because they are more prone to a western lifestyle, however it is not astonishing that it falls under a more conservative line. In India, most marriages are still arranged between families and divorce is not a viable option. Hence a more relaxed persona towards infidelity, in particular since its certainty in criminal terms has halted. Moreover, Indian women who chose to cheat on their husbands reasoned that their marriage had become monotonous and seeking a partner outside marriage permitted them to add excitement to their lives.”
