The government has stated that the development of strategic infrastructure along border areas is being undertaken in a holistic and comprehensive manner, encompassing the construction of roads, strategic railway lines, and tunnels.
This initiative aims to ensure all-weather connectivity and strengthen defence preparedness along the borders.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Minister of State for Defence, Shripad Naik, said that a revised Long-Term Roll-On Works Plan of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been formulated for a five-year period from 2018–19 to 2022–23. The plan includes the construction and upgradation of 272 roads, covering a total length of over 14,500 km.
Out of these, 61 roads spanning more than 3,300 km have been identified as strategic. Work has already been completed on over 2,300 km.
Once completed, these projects are expected to significantly enhance accessibility in border regions, particularly in areas where infrastructure and forward connectivity are currently inadequate.
