A delegation from the University of Bristol, UK, visited Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on Thursday, 17th November 2022, to explore academic and research collaboration between the two institutions. Prof. Mini Shaji Thomas, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, JMI, greeted the delegation led by Prof. Ian Bond, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, University of Bristol, UK.
Prof. Thomas gave a presentation where she elaborated on the research profile of the university to the delegates, followed by a presentation on research highlights of University of Bristol, UK.
The main objective of the interaction was to identify areas in which both universities could explore research collaborations with each other, common areas being Earthquake Engineering, Materials, Sustainability and Environment, Communications etc.
Prof. Charl Faul, Faculty International Director, Faculty of Science, University of Bristol, UK, a member of the delegation delivered a lecture on “Materials Chemistry Against Climate Change-Using Chemistry For Good!”, organized by the Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, JMI. The talk was enthusiastically attended by a large number of scholars, students, faculties Head of various departments of JMI.
Prof. Charl Faul’s lecture focused on his research in Materials Chemistry, Synthetic polymers with tunable structures and properties by using reactions to change the bonds in molecules. These materials have varied applications in fields ranging from environmental science where it can be used for CO2 capture and help in the fight against climate change) to electronics, where it can be used to replace Lithium-ion batteries and in effluent treatment.
He further elaborated on Hansen solubility parameters and how he and his team have come up with a toolkit that can calculate parameters for particular reactions.. Prof. Faul ended his lecture by talking about the next steps that he and his team will be taking in this field.
The lecture was followed by an engaging, in-depth question answer session. Earlier, Prof. Sirajuddin Ahmed, In charge, Department of Environmental Science, JMI, delivered the welcome address, and introduced the esteemed speaker, Prof. Charl Faul, the event closed with a Vote of Thanks by Ms.Shazia Shifa a student of the Department of Environment Science,JMI.
