A corruption case has surfaced from Bihar’s Rohtas district, where a Block Resource Centre (BRC) data operator was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹14,000. The arrest was made on Friday by the state vigilance team near the official’s residence in Akorhigola, following a complaint from a government school teacher.
The incident has also put the local Block Education Officer (BEO) under scrutiny, who was found missing when the vigilance team attempted a search at his residence.
Who Was Arrested
The accused has been identified as Chandan Kumar Sharma, a computer data operator posted at the Akorhigola BRC in Rohtas district. Investigators say he was demanding money from teachers in exchange for processing salary fixation files.
According to officials, Sharma was apprehended while accepting ₹14,000—part of an alleged demand linked to multiple teachers’ cases.
Bribe Demand Linked to Salary Fixation
The case originated from a complaint filed by Sunil Kumar, a “Vishisht Shikshak” (special category teacher) posted at Middle School, Bank. In his application dated November 24, he alleged that Sharma had demanded money to complete salary fixation not only for him but also for nine other teachers.
As per the complaint, the demand was ₹1,500 per teacher, amounting to a total of ₹15,000. After verification of the allegations, the vigilance department planned a trap operation.
Trap and Arrest Near Residence
Acting on the verified complaint, the vigilance team laid a trap and arrested Sharma near his residence while he was allegedly receiving the bribe amount. The cash was recovered on the spot, officials confirmed.
Vigilance DSP Vindyachal Prasad stated that the operation was conducted strictly as per procedure after preliminary inquiry established the credibility of the complaint.
BEO Under Scanner, Found Absent
During the operation, the vigilance team also reached the Dehri residence of the Block Education Officer linked to the BRC. However, the officer was not present at the location. Officials said further action will depend on findings during the ongoing investigation.
Why This Case Is Significant
Salary fixation is a routine administrative process, but repeated complaints suggest it is often used as leverage to extract illegal payments from teachers. This arrest highlights how lower-level administrative posts can become pressure points for corruption.
