
The UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in association with Faculty of Education, JMI began its 2nd (First Online) two-week Refresher Course in Teacher Education: Learning Outcomes and Educational Reform- Pedagogy, Assessment and Quality Assurance from 12th -26th December, 2020 for training and skill building of more than 75 young faculty members from different Universities and Colleges across India.
Inaugural session started today with a welcome address by Prof. Anisur Rahman, Director, UGC- HRDC, JMI. Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, JMI was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session. Chairing of the session was done by Prof. Aejaz Masih, Dean Faculty of Education and Nodal Officer, School of Education under the Ministry of Education scheme of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers & Teaching. During her inaugural address Prof. Najma Akhtar underlined the significance of the refresher course that teaching is considered to be one of the most significant professions.
She emphasized that ‘You are lucky to be in this profession and catering to the need of the society. Now the responsibilities fall upon you to take the nation forward’. She said that capacity building in teachers are normally neglected which could result in unpleasant educational outcomes. To address this gap, refresher training programme is essential for updating knowledge, as well as, understanding contemporary nuances of education. Learning is a gradual process, and therefore, teachers must learn a lot more to be able to continuously respond adequately to the changing requirements of the learners, such as, their background, aspirations and learning styles. She hoped that the participants will get profound academic input and exposure in this refresher programme that will be useful for their future growth and the societal change.Under the chair remarks, Prof. Aejaz Masih highlighted that this refresher programme is very unique in the sense that the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar herself is a renowned educationist and a teacher educator herself. Prof. Masih focussed upon traditional, conventional, more transformative and more innovative pedagogies which is the need of the hour. He said that ‘lokvidya’ which is also focussed in the National Education Policy 2020 should sync with the on-going education as it is more western oriented at present. He also emphasized the need of creation of ‘Indian Education Services (IES)’through which Indian Education can be improved and do away with the isolation that our education is provided at the moment. The course coordinators Dr. Sajjad Ahmad, Department of Educational Studies and Dr. Ansar Ahmad, Department of Teacher Training & NFE (IASE), Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi jointly outlined the overview of the programme and the engagement of the participants for the next two weeks. They emphasized that over the next two weeks, eminent expert speakers from different domain expertise across India and abroad will train and equip young faculty on different aspects of education about Teacher Education: Learning Outcomes and Educational Reform- Pedagogy, Assessment and Quality Assurance.
