
School of Education, Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) organised a Webinar on ‘National Education Policy 2020: Deciphering the Transformational Reforms’ on 16th September 2020.The webinar brought together distinguished academicians from universities as well as from various national level statutory and autonomous bodies, former and present vice chancellors and deputy vice chancellor from national and international universities, policy makers and researchers.The webinar was inaugurated by Prof Suranjan Das, Vice Chancellor, Jadavpur University, West Bengal. Prof. Das in his inaugural address highlighted the need to address the digital divide. He stated that online teaching learning is to be done in blended mode only. He highlighted the fact that technology cannot substitute teachers in an institution and universities should continue to be place of debate.In her Presidential Address Prof Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, JMI stated that the NEP2020 is holistic, flexible, multi-disciplinary, and aligned with sustainable development and the individual needs of the stakeholders. It also stresses on equity and inclusion. She also appreciated the transformational ideas in higher education.Prof. Aejaz Masih , Dean, Faculty of Education and the Nodal Officer of School of Education in the beginning of the inaugural session welcomed the guests and the participants and highlighted the motto and the relevance of the webinar.Apart from Prof. Suranjan Das eminent panalists and chair in the webinar were Prof B. P.Khandelwal, Former Director, NIEPA, Prof. Mohd Miyan, Former Vice Chancellor, MANUU, Prof Sanjeev Sharma, Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Motihari, Bihar, Prof Mohd. Muzammil, Former Vice Chancellor, B R Ambedkar University, Agra, Prof Furqan Qamar, Centre for Management Studies , JMI and former Secretary General AIU, Prof C. B. Sharma, former Chairman, NIOS, Prof Mohan B Menon , Former Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Support,Wawasan Open University, Malaysia (Open Distance learning), Prof S. K.Panda, former Chairman, NCTE, Prof. Veera Gupta, Department of Educational Policy ,NIEPA , Prof Saroj Yadav, Dean ( Academic) ,NCERT and Dr Illyas Hussain .The various speakers and panellists pointed out the need for increase in infrastructure to support the policy. Other important points raised by them are;- There is a need to create counsellors and social workers who would bring children to school.- There is a need to transform Anganwadi and make clear-cut guidelines to connect Anganwadi to school. The low salary of the Anganwadi workers is also an impacting factor that affects the quality.- A lot of trained manpower is required in terms of teachers and other functionaries in order to make ECCE a fundamental right. Assessment system also needs to be reworked out and judiciously prepared teaching learning materials are the need of the hour.- More clarity regarding the open distance learning system is desirable. The mind-set of people about ODL needs to be changed, multidisciplinary and holistic and modular mode of education was appreciated by the speakers and they stated that this should be implemented in earnest.- Proposed four year integrated teacher preparation programme needs to be worked out cautiously. Quality of teacher educators also needs to be addressed .Furthermore the teachers and teacher educators need to be developed more thoughtfully.The speakers hailed NEP 2020 for its India centric approach and changing the landscape of education with the need to make education more indigenous. They highlighted the need of translation of vision to practice.The Webinar Convenor was Dr Savita Kaushal, IASE and Dr Ansar Ahmad, IASE and Dr Mohd Jawaid Hussain, Department of Educational Studies were the co – convenors.
