IN LCU L56, the sixth ship of the Landing Craft Utility (LCU) MK IV class, was commissioned into the Indian Navy at a ceremony held at Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam on July 29, 2019. The ceremony was led by Atul Kumar Jain in the presence of senior naval officials and dignitaries.
During the event, Vice Admiral Jain congratulated Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers for becoming the first Indian shipyard to build 100 warships. He highlighted that LCU L56 would strengthen the maritime and disaster relief capabilities of the Andaman and Nicobar Command.
The amphibious vessel is designed for transporting and deploying tanks, armoured vehicles, troops, and equipment from ship to shore. It will also undertake search and rescue missions, coastal patrol, surveillance, beaching operations, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) tasks across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The ship will be based at Port Blair under the Naval Component Commander of ANC.
