WhatsApp may soon move away from its completely free model, with the popular messaging platform preparing to introduce a subscription-based option linked to the Status feature. The development has surfaced from an analysis of WhatsApp version 2.26.3.9, indicating a major shift in how users experience the app.
According to reports, WhatsApp is working on bringing advertisements to the Status tab, a move the company has been developing for some time despite user resistance. While sending messages and core chat features are expected to remain free, the change would directly impact how users interact with Status updates.
The new system could offer users a paid, ad-free subscription, allowing them to view and post Status updates without advertisements. Those who choose not to subscribe may continue using the Status feature, but with ads displayed between updates, similar to formats seen on other Meta-owned platforms.
The findings from the app’s latest beta code suggest that WhatsApp is committed to monetising the Status section, positioning it as a key revenue stream in the future. If implemented, this would mark the first time everyday users are asked to pay for an ad-free experience on WhatsApp.
