In a historic moment, Honourable Raksha Mantri (RM) Shri Rajnath Singh made his maiden visit to the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest and most formidable battlefield. Accompanied by General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Army Staff, the Raksha Mantri landed at the Thoise airfield, where he was warmly received by Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command.
Following a detailed orientation of the area, the RM undertook an aerial reconnaissance of the glacier to understand the vastness and strategic importance of this harsh and frozen frontier. He then proceeded to one of the forward posts, where he interacted with the courageous troops stationed at extreme altitudes under life-threatening conditions.
Addressing the troops at the Siachen Base Camp, Shri Rajnath Singh said:
“I am proud of all Army personnel serving in Siachen who are leaving no stone unturned in the service of the nation. I also salute their parents who have raised sons and daughters with the courage to defend our motherland. I will personally send a thank-you note to each of them.”
The Raksha Mantri lauded the tenacious resolve and unmatched commitment of the ‘Siachen Warriors’ who safeguard India’s borders in some of the most inhospitable and treacherous terrain on Earth, often under severe sub-zero temperatures and high winds.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Armed Forces and assured the troops that all operational and administrative requirements at Siachen are being prioritized:
“The Government is fully aware of your needs and stands firmly behind you. Every effort will be made to ensure your operational effectiveness and well-being.”
In a solemn ceremony, Shri Rajnath Singh laid a wreath at the Siachen War Memorial, paying homage to the valiant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of the nation.
This visit serves as a powerful reminder of the selfless devotion and indomitable spirit of the Indian Armed Forces, and the nation’s unwavering gratitude for their service.
