
Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar today delivered her address in the online Conclave on ‘Transformational Reforms in higher Education’ organised by the University Grants Commission(UGC), MHRD under New Education Policy(NEP)2020.
Conclave started with the welcome address by the UGC Chairman Prof. D.P. Singh. Shri Amit Khare, Secretary (Higher Education), MHRD gave opening remarks about the NEP2020 which was followed by a keynote address by Dr. K Kasturirangan, Chairman, Committee for draft NEP.
Hon’ble Minister of HRD Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Hon’ble Minister of State for HRD Shri Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre delivered their address before the inaugural address by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji.
Prof. Najma Akhtar delivered her lecture in the first session of the conclave titled ‘Holistic, Multidisciplinary and Futuristic Education’. She congratulated the government especially to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji and Hon’ble Minister of HRD, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ ji for an all-embracing and all-encompassing NEP 2020.
Prof. Akhtar said that the NEP2020 amply shows the earnest and sincere concern of the government towards our education and welfare through education. Its profound interest in regulating, controlling and guiding the educational system of the country betrays that the government wishes the citizens of its nations to be equipped well with the most modern education in sync with contemporary demands.
“The holistic and multidisciplinary education with flexible curriculums, creative combination of subjects, integration of vocational education, multiple entry and exit with proper certification speak volumes of our government’s enlightened and progressive approach towards education”, Prof. Akhtar said.
The Vice Chancellor said that the ‘holistic, multidisciplinary and futuristic education’ as enunciated in the NEP2020 aspires to create sound mind in sound body. It seeks to cultivate minds, build character and meticulously
prepare eminent researchers and teachers. It also aspires to provide initiative and freedom to the students while transforming the system to meet the needs of 21st century India through proper solutions to the multiple pedagogical problems and eradication of structural inequities and asymmetries.
Since research activities are concentrated in specialist institutes, central universities and a few state universities, NEP2020 wants to end the fragmentation of higher education by moving higher education into large multidisciplinary universities and colleges, she said. Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities will be founded for multidisciplinary education and research. Well-equipped, they will compete with the best multidisciplinary education and research universities in the world.
Describing NEP2020 as truly futuristic in nature Prof. Akhtar said its recommendations are modern and they are apt and appropriate for time in future. They show their strength to impart capacity for clear thinking, scientific minds and attitude, receptivity to new ideas, respect for the dignity of every individual, ability to live harmoniously with true sense of patriotism and world citizenship. The recommendations aspire to fulfil various aims of education.
