New Delhi, November 16: The Department of Mechanical Engineering and the student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a seminar on “Hydrogen: The Fight Against Climate Change” by Mr. Hammad Khalid, Project Lead for Direct Air Capture Fraunhofer Institute of Solar Energy Freiburg, Germany, on 14th November 2023.
The program started with a welcome address by the ASME team members, who gave an introduction of Mr. Hammad Khalid’s academic and professional journey. Mr. Khalid is an alumnus of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, JMI and has completed his master’s program in Mechatronics from Germany. He initially worked as a software developer working for clients like Volkswagen and ABB, but his quest for knowledge took him to Fraunhofer Institute of Solar Energy, where he could merge his technical expertise with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability. He immersed himself in the fascinating field of hydrogen technologies, clean energy solutions, and sustainable environmental practices.
In his discourse Mr. Khalid initiated the audience with the present level of pollution in the capital of India, Delhi. Mr. Khalid then lead on to describe how the dream to extract fuel from the sea by using energy from the sun to power the planet earth can become a reality in India’s quest for Energy Transition. He elaborated on how Green Hydrogen is a promising alternative for enabling this transition. He also discussed the different shades of Hydrogen and how the method of obtaining green hydrogen would save the 830 million tonnes of CO2 that is emitted annually when this gas is produced using fossil fuels.
The program ended with questions from the audience, followed by a vote of thanks, by Prof ZA Khan, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The ASME team lead, by, the President Farhan, Vice President Muskan, and faculty advisor Prof Sabah Khan also thanked Mr. Khalid for taking out time during his short visit to India for delivering a lecture on a topic which is the need of the hour. The seminar was well attended by both students and faculty of the department.
