The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a serving Army officer and a private individual in connection with an alleged bribery racket linked to defence procurement, uncovering large sums of unaccounted cash during coordinated searches.
Army Officer Held After Cash Recovery in Delhi
According to the CBI, Lieutenant Colonel Deepak Kumar Sharma, posted with the Department of Defence Production, was taken into custody after searches at his Delhi residence led to the recovery of ₹3 lakh allegedly received as bribe money. In addition, officials seized more than ₹2 crore in cash from the premises, raising serious questions about the source of the funds.
Middleman Arrested in Rajasthan
The second accused, identified as Vinod Kumar, was arrested following searches at his residence in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Investigators recovered ₹10 lakh in cash along with documents and materials described as incriminating, suggesting his role as a key intermediary in the alleged deal.
Case Involves Defence Manufacturing Links
The CBI has registered a case against Lt Col Sharma, his wife Colonel Kajal Bali, and several other individuals, including representatives of a Dubai-based company engaged in defence manufacturing and exports. Officials believe the case relates to undue advantages allegedly extended in matters connected to defence production and supply.
Accused Sent to Police Custody
Both arrested individuals were produced before a court on Sunday, which granted police remand until December 23 to allow investigators to further examine financial trails, communications, and potential links to foreign entities.
Wider Implications Under Scrutiny
Sources indicate that the agency is examining whether the case points to a broader network involving defence contracts, overseas companies, and misuse of official position. More searches and questioning of other suspects are likely as the investigation progresses.
