Mohan Thomas has highlighted the growing awareness and demand for treatment of male breast enlargement, a condition medically known as Gynecomastia.
According to Dr. Thomas, enlargement of male breasts can occur due to several factors including hormonal changes during puberty, obesity, long-term use of certain medications or recreational drugs, and idiopathic causes where the exact reason remains unknown.
He explained that during puberty, hormonal imbalance or low levels of male hormones may lead to temporary breast tissue enlargement in boys. While the condition usually resolves naturally by adulthood, persistent breast tissue and fat deposits can result in noticeable male breast enlargement.
Dr. Thomas stated that obesity is another major cause, often accompanied by loose skin around the chest area, while some medications and drugs may stimulate breast tissue growth over prolonged use.
Discussing treatment options, he said modern cosmetic procedures now allow correction through minimally invasive “keyhole male breast surgery,” which primarily uses liposuction techniques with specialised instruments. The procedure involves very small incisions, minimal scarring and relatively quick recovery, allowing patients to resume work within a few days.
He added that patients are typically advised to wear pressure garments for around three weeks after surgery to support healing and reduce swelling. The procedure is designed to improve chest contour while removing excess fat and breast tissue.
Dr. Thomas noted that older surgical methods often involved larger incisions below the nipple area and sometimes resulted in contour irregularities. In contrast, liposuction-based techniques offer more aesthetically balanced outcomes with fewer visible marks.
