UPL's path breaking ProNutiva crop package increases Mustard yield by over 10 percent in Haryana and Rajasthan 1

Jaipur/Hisar, 13th January 2022: UPL Ltd., a global provider of sustainable agriculture products and solutions has helped farmers in Rajasthan and Haryana increase the yield of their mustard crops by as much as 10 percent using its ProNutiva package in the second phase of a programme that, when replicated on a larger scale, can slash India’s dependence on edible oil imports.

The ProNutiva Package included three biological products from UPL’s sustainable solutions portfolio – Zeba with its superabsorbent profile helped in maximising water utilisation and nutrition; Copio helped improve soil heath and made nutrients available; Macarena helped the crop fight stress by providing required nutrition. In addition to increasing the yield, the package also increase the oil content of the mustard crop significantly.

The programme was rolled out across 11,000 acres under mustard cultivation as part of its second phase. The first phase last year covered 5,000 acres.

Edible oils are an important part of the Indian cooking and yet 60 percent of the country’s edible oil needs are met through imports. Rajasthan and Haryana accounts for 60 percent of the mustard produced in India. This project therefore has a huge potential to increase the domestic production and achieve self-sufficiency in mustard.

Ashish Dobhal, Director, India Region, UPL said, “We, at UPL, are dedicated to the welfare and prosperity of the farmers who are our key stakeholders. Through innovation, we aim to provide sustainable products to farmers that guarantee them not just financial stability but also environment sustainability. Through the application of this crop package, we aim to increase the yield and oil content of the mustard crop, thereby contributing to making India a self-sufficient producer of edible oils.”

Savesh Kumar, Head, Field Marketing-India, UPL, said, “With our mustard crop package we are trying to overcome the farmer pain points of water management, soil nutrition and nutrition absorption. The initiative so far has shown tremendous results and we hope to make this initiative a national success. We are delighted to see the incredible results from the program, which has led to not only an increase in the crop yield, but also boosted farmer incomes. Another similar example of the Pronutiva success is in Gujarat in groundnut crop.”

Manish Kumar, Farmer, Kanuwali, Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, said, “Due to the use of Zeba and Copio in my Mustard farm, I have achieved 7.6 quintal per acre, compared to 6 quintals per acre in other farm where I did not use the package. It also helped reduce the water requirement and improve the crop quality”

Ramesh Chandra, farmer from JakhodKheda, Mandi, Hisar, Haryana, said, “I applied UPL’s ProNutiva Package in my 5 acres of mustard plot. I achieved 10.5 quintal per acre of mustard in the plot where the package was applied and 9.25 quintals mustard in the plot where the package was not used – a 13% increase.”
