Chennai, May 4, 2026: In a historic political shift, actor-turned-politician Vijay has delivered a breakthrough performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerging as the single-largest party in the state.
According to Election Commission trends and results, TVK has won 96 seats and is leading in 11 more, putting it within striking distance of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has secured 54 seats and is leading in 6, while All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has won 44 seats and is ahead in 3 constituencies.
Major Upset: Stalin Loses Kolathur
In one of the biggest upsets of the election, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin lost his long-held Kolathur seat to TVK’s V.S. Babu, marking a symbolic and political setback for the DMK. Stalin later conceded defeat, stating that he “bows to the verdict of the people.”
Vijay Wins, TVK Expands Footprint
Vijay himself won from the Perambur constituency, defeating his DMK rival. His party also registered a notable victory in Virugambakkam, where R. Sabarinathan secured a win by over 27,000 votes.
AIADMK, DMK Leaders React
Edappadi K. Palaniswami, despite winning his Edappadi seat by a record margin of over 98,000 votes, acknowledged the broader electoral setback for his party.
Meanwhile, national leaders, including Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi, congratulated Vijay on his party’s performance, calling it a reflection of shifting voter sentiment.
End of Dravidian Duopoly?
The results indicate a potential disruption of Tamil Nadu’s decades-long bipolar political structure dominated by DMK and AIADMK. TVK’s rapid rise, driven by a strong youth appeal and anti-incumbency sentiment, signals a generational and structural shift in the state’s political landscape.
Current Tally Snapshot (as per latest data)
- TVK: 96 seats won, leading in 11
- DMK: 54 seats won, leading in 6
- AIADMK: 44 seats won, leading in 3
As counting concludes, all eyes are now on government formation, with TVK poised to play a central role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s next political chapter.
