Railways has distributed over 30 lakh free meals to needy persons during the ongoing lockdown due to COVID-19 outbreak. The food is being distributed to the poor, children, migrant labourers, stranded persons and the needy who come in search of food near the railway stations. AIR correspondent reports that more than 17 lakhs of these meals have been provided by IRCTC.
AIR correspondent reports that starting with distribution of food to around five thousand needy people at over 74 locations on 28th of last month, the number is growing everyday. Presently about fifty thousand people are provided meals daily at around 300 locations across the country. Railways has been providing bulk cooked food with paper plates for lunch and food packets for dinner in collaboration with IRCTC -based kitchens, Railway Protection Force and several NGOs. Railway Protection Force has played a major role in the food distribution to needy people. Proper social distancing is being ensured during preparation and distribution of meals.
