New Delhi: Then President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, paving the way for stricter traffic regulations and enhanced road safety measures.
The law increases penalties for traffic violations, strengthens provisions related to third-party insurance, regulates cab aggregators, and introduces reforms aimed at reducing road accidents. It also provides for cashless treatment of accident victims during the "golden hour"—the critical first hour after an injury.
Additionally, compensation in hit-and-run cases has been significantly increased, with death compensation raised to ₹2 lakh and grievous injury compensation to ₹50,000.
