Legal Position on Videography
Courts have previously clarified that videography inside a police station does not amount to a violation of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, provided it does not obstruct officials in the discharge of their duties.
Additional Director General (ADG) Bhanu Bhaskar stated that there is no restriction on print media and that the matter has been explained to the concerned officer.
SSP’s Clarification
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Avinash Pandey clarified that the CO’s remarks were allegedly made in reference to certain portal-based reporters who were conducting unnecessary videography inside the police station.
He reiterated that there is no blanket restriction on print media.
Attempts were made to contact CO Soumya Asthana for her response, but she did not answer calls.
The incident has reignited debate over media access to police premises and the balance between transparency and operational discipline.
