A Delhi court on Thursday convicted three persons, including a Junior Engineer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in a bribery case involving illegal gratification sought in exchange for allowing construction work to continue.
The order was passed by Special Judge Shailendra Malik at the Rouse Avenue Court, which fixed January 5 for hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence.
Bribe Demanded for Allowing Construction
According to the prosecution, the accused demanded a bribe from a complainant in return for permitting construction of his house. They allegedly threatened to demolish the property if the payment was not made.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered an FIR in 2024 following a complaint by Arun Kumar Gupta, who alleged that the accused sought illegal gratification to ensure smooth continuation of construction work.
Those convicted have been identified as Ramesh Chand Jain, who was serving as a Junior Engineer with the MCD at the time, Surender Kumar Sharma, and Surender Kumar Jangra, an MCD helper.
CBI Trap and Evidence
As per the CBI, the incident dates back to March 18, 2024, when Sharma demanded a bribe from the complainant. When the money was not paid, threats were allegedly issued to demolish the house. The complainant then approached the CBI, which laid a trap and caught Sharma red-handed while accepting the bribe.
