Raipur, April 7: In a major environmental infrastructure push, the Hasdeo River — considered the lifeline of Korba — is set to undergo a major pollution-control and rejuvenation drive with an approved outlay of ₹165 crore under AMRUT Mission 2.0.
The project involves the installation of a state-of-the-art 20 MLD tertiary treatment plant to scientifically treat the city’s sewage before it enters the river.
For years, wastewater from 11 major city drains had been flowing directly into the Hasdeo, affecting the river’s water quality. To provide a permanent solution, the new plant will intercept and treat the polluted discharge using advanced wastewater treatment technology.
Under the project, nearly 33 million litres (3.30 crore litres) of contaminated water per day will be prevented from entering the river and instead processed through the new treatment facility.
Officials said the initiative is expected to significantly reduce river pollution and restore the Hasdeo’s natural flow and water quality.
Once completed, Korba will join a select group of 12 cities in India equipped with such advanced scientific water treatment infrastructure.
The project also carries a strong waste-to-wealth component. Instead of letting the treated water go to waste, it will be purchased by NTPC at predetermined rates, ensuring a sustainable industrial water supply while also boosting the municipal corporation’s revenue and supporting groundwater conservation efforts.
Collector Shri Kunal Dudawat described the approval as a historic step for Korba district, saying the scientific solution prepared by the Municipal Corporation Korba in line with National Green Tribunal norms is now moving towards implementation.
