New Delhi, 2nd October,2024: Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) celebrated Swachh Bharat Diwas 2024 today to commemorate 155th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and to mark the completion of 10 years of the launch of one of the most significant mass movements for cleanliness – the Swachh Bharat Mission. The university paid rich tributes to father the nation Mahatma Gandhi by organising a number of programmes under "Swachhata Hi Seva Mela 2024" .
Volunteers of NSS, JMI under the supervision of its Programme Officer Dr Abid Hussain took out an awareness rally which was flagged off by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Shakeel from VC Office premises. The rally culminated at the Centenary Gate of the university after taking a round of the campus and nearby areas. Mr. M. Nasim Haider, Officiating Registrar, JMI was also joined the Vice Chancellor in flagging off the rally. Apart from volunteers of NSS, teachers and non-teaching staff of the university also participated in the rally.
Dr. Zakir Husain Library and Office of the Deans Students’ Welfare (DSW) of the university jointly organized a lecture and an exhibition titled "Mahatma Gandhi: Life and Works". The exhibition was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor in the presence of the Registrar, JMI, Mr. M. Nasim Haider, Deans, University Librarin Dr Vikas S. Nagrale, teachers and non-teaching staff.
Some of hand written private letters of Mahatma Gandhi in different languages, his photographs, books on him and by him, a copy of his newspaper ‘Young India’ and other significant archival materials have been displayed as part of the exhibition. The exhibition will be open for the audience for one week.
A special lecture commemorating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi was also organised in the Library. Prof. Ravindran Gopinath from the Department of History JMI delivered the lecture.
Students of different departments presented speech on Mahatma Gandhi and his vision for India. The music team of the varsity sang Gandhi Ji's favourite Bhajan during the program. The program was concluded with the vote of thanks by the Deputy Librarian, Dr. Sufian Ahmad.
The university celebrated 'Swachhata Hi Sewa' fortnight celebration from 17th September which culminated today in Swachh Bharat Diwas.
