The Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) recently culminated a two-day National Seminar titled “Women in India’s Freedom Movement : Exploring their Visibility and Invisibility” on 9th and 10th August, 2023. The seminar was sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) as an integral part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations commemorating India’s 76th years of Independence.
The two day thought provoking National Seminar passionately strived to unveil the often overlooked and underrepresented contributions of women in India’s struggle for freedom while acknowledging the historical challenges of their invisibility.
The enlightening event was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, a distinguished social scientist and former member of the Planning Commission, who delivered an impactful keynote address. Dr.Hameed adeptly highlighted the vital yet frequently overlooked contributions of working-class women, whose narratives have regrettably been erased from historical accounts.
Prof. Maitrayee Chaudhuri, a respected academician, former professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), offered illuminating insights into the personal tribulations faced by women during the freedom struggle, underscoring the indispensable roles of education and political involvement in the journey toward women’s emancipation.
The seminar garnered notable success, evident in the enthusiastic participation of scholars from across the nation. With six engaging technical sessions, two plenary sessions and an invigorating invited talk titled “Lost in the History: India’s Women Freedom Fighters” eloquently delivered by the esteemed Prof. Vibhuti Patel, Vice President of the Association of Indian Women Studies, the seminar captivated and engaged a diverse audience.
The grand culmination of the seminar was marked by a resplendent valedictory address, delivered by the distinguished Prof. Zoya Hasan, a distinguished Professor Emeritus at JNU. Her inspiring words resonated with the essence of the seminar, reinforcing the significance of recognizing women’s invaluable contributions to India’s freedom movement. As the curtains drew on this enlightening event, its profound impact reverberated, shedding light on the unparalleled dedication, resilience, and determination exhibited by women who have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
Prof. Arvinder A. Ansari, the Honorary Director of CSSEIP and the Convenor of the seminar, proudly announced the overwhelming response to the call for papers. With heartfelt gratitude, she extended a warm vote of thanks to all contributors and attendees, acknowledging their pivotal role in making the seminar an unequivocal triumph.
