The Department of History and Culture, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi organized the 4th Mushirul Hasan Memorial Lecture on 27th of August 2024. The Lecture was delivered by Prof. Tanika Sarkar; a stalwart historian. Professor Sarkar is currently serving as a Visiting Professor at Ashoka University after her retirement from JNU. She has also taught at the Yale, Chicago and Goettingen universities. The title of the Lecture was: Widow Immolations in the Colonial Archive: Early 19th Century Debates. The talk was grounded in valuable archival records and their deep analysis. The mesmerizing lecture by Professor Sarkar held the massive audience spellbound.
Professor Mohammad Shakeel, Officiating Vice Chancellor, JMI graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Professor Zoya Hasan and Professor Iqtidar Mohd. Khan, Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Languages, JMI were present as special guests.
The Vice Chancellor highlighted the immeasurable services that Professor Mushirul Hasan rendered to the growth of academics in general and JMI in particular. He emphasised that the government of India has launched many schemes to enhance gender justice and the University is committed to ensure gender equality. Professor Iqtidar Mohd. Khan and Professor Farhat Nasreen spoke about Professor Mushirul Hasan.
The brilliant lecture was very well attended and much appreciated. It was an occasion to derive inspiration from the life and works of Professor Mushirul Hasan.
