The artificial limb Jaipur Foot camp in the Central American country Nicaragua was inaugurated in the Capital city of Managua by Dr. Carlos Saens, Vice Minister of Health of Nicaragua and Dr Sumit Seth, Ambassador of India to Nicaragua. This camp is organised by the ministry of external affairs in association with the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), the manufacturer of the world-famous Jaipur Foot.
The president of the BMVSS Satish Mehta during the inauguration of the camp said that seven skilled technicians will provide 500 artificial limbs in the camp The camp, being organized by Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti Jaipur, will continue till October 31. All these will be provided free of cost to the Divyangs (disabled)of Nicaragua. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ambassador Satish Mehta, President of BMVSS, highlighted the unique features of the Jaipur Foot limb, which enables divyangs to lead a normal life by restoring their mobility and dignity. He conveyed that the Jaipur Foot is the most used artificial limb in the works and BMVSS the world’s largest organization for rehabilitation of divyangs. The fact that BMVSS had conducted 118 camps in 47 countries was a proof of the quality of Jaipur Foot and its suitability and acceptability in the developing world. He conveyed his deep appreciation of the support of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India in sponsoring the camp and of the Ministry of Health of Nicaragua for providing the venue, staff and other facilities. Ambassador Seth recalled his association with the Jaipur Foot camp in Myanmar in 2018 and highlighted that this was the first camp in the Americas under the ‘India for Humanity’ programme of the Ministry of External Affairs.
Minister Dr Saens thanked the Government of India and the Indian Embassy for this humanitarian gesture and said that this help was much needed and welcome. He was very impressed with the transformation he has seen in the beneficiaries who had received Jaipur Foot. He expressed his amazement that the 7 member Jaipur Foot team was fitting 15 limbs a day. He requested long term technical cooperation with BMVSS. BMVSS President Mehta assured him of all support. Minister Saens, Ambassador Seth and other dignitaries handed over Jaipur Foot limbs to a few beneficiaries and conversed with them.
