As part of the expansion of India’s indigenous railway safety systems, Kavach 4.0, the Made-in-India Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, has been successfully commissioned on Gujarat’s Bajwa (Vadodara)–Ahmedabad section, spanning 96 km. This marks the first deployment of Kavach 4.0 in the state.
The project covers 17 stations and establishes a robust safety infrastructure comprising 23 towers, 20 Kavach buildings/huts, 192 km of optical fiber cable, and 2,872 RFID tags.
The first train to operate under the Kavach system on this route was the Sankalp Fast Passenger (59549/59550), hauled by a WAP-7 locomotive with 11 LHB coaches.
Fully Operational Safety System
Kavach 4.0 is now fully functional on this rail section. It has been designed to automatically mitigate safety risks and prevent consequences arising from situations such as Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD). The system ensures automatic speed control by monitoring sectional speeds, loop lines, and Permanent Speed Restrictions (PSR). It also provides protection against head-on and rear-end collisions.
Additional safety features include an emergency SOS function and automatic whistling at level crossing gates.
Nationwide Progress
So far, Kavach has been implemented on more than 2,200 route kilometers across the Indian Railways network.
