India’s push to make healthcare more affordable is set to enter a new phase. The government has announced plans to expand the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras to 25,000 by March 2027, strengthening access to low-cost, quality generic medicines across the country.
From 80 Stores to a Nationwide Network
The Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) was launched with a simple but powerful goal: ensure that every citizen can access good-quality medicines at affordable prices.
The scale of growth over the last decade has been striking.
In 2014, there were just 80 Jan Aushadhi Kendras nationwide.
As of 30 November 2025, that number has risen to 17,610.
The new target of 25,000 Kendras by March 2027 reflects the government’s confidence in the programme’s impact and sustainability.
Why Jan Aushadhi Is Gaining Trust
Awareness around affordable generic medicines has steadily increased, and with it, public confidence in Jan Aushadhi products. This trust is visible in two clear trends:
Rising sales, as more citizens opt for Jan Aushadhi medicines over costlier branded alternatives
An expanding product range, covering a wider spectrum of commonly used drugs
Together, these factors have improved the commercial viability of Jan Aushadhi Kendras, making them a more attractive opportunity for entrepreneurs and institutions.
Strong Growth Signals on the Ground
Recent data underlines the programme’s momentum.
In the last financial year alone:
The number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras grew by 37%
The maximum retail price value of sales under the scheme rose by 38%
This combination of expanding reach and growing demand has accelerated the pace at which new Kendras are being set up across states and districts.
Who Can Open a Jan Aushadhi Kendra
To widen participation, the scheme allows a broad range of applicants. Jan Aushadhi Kendras can be opened by:
Individual entrepreneurs
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
Societies and trusts
Firms and private companies
Applications are invited online through the official portal (www.janaushadhi.gov.in) from across the country, including Andhra Pradesh and other states.
Parliamentary Update
The information was shared by Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers, Ms. Anupriya Patel, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, reaffirming the government’s long-term commitment to affordable healthcare delivery.
