Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) yesterday organized a workshop on 'Reflective Narratives for Ethical Dental Practice' which was attended by 50 interns and externs, BDS batch of 2021.
The programme commenced with the Coordinator, Dr. Ashu Bharadwaj, Professor Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, welcoming the gathering and emphasizing on the role of reflective narratives as a means of ethical dental practice. Prof. Anuradha Sharma, the coordinator, in her introduction to the theme, highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between knowledge and practice of ethics in dentistry, through creative reflective narratives.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Upreet Dhaliwal, retired Director-Professor of Ophthalmology from the University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi. As the Co-founder of the Health Humanities Group and the founding editor of the journal RHiME [Research & Humanities in Medical Education], she explores ethical dilemmas through poetry, reflective narratives, and story telling. She is the National Advisor for ‘ AAROHAN’, a National Interdisciplinary Health Humanities Forum, where medicine meets art, ethics, culture and human values.
Dr. Upreet Dhaliwal used an interactive session by incorporating a question-and-answer format, storytelling, poetry, and images to conduct the workshop. She elaborated on dental ethics and ‘narratives,’ as segments of a story, and how they shape community discourse. Highlighting on humanistic competencies through a poetry, participants were made aware about critical reflexivity, visual literacy, advocacy, and cultural and structural humility. She also used images to invoke suppressed feelings of empathy, anger, trauma, and justice for patients. Participants were encouraged to share their stories and come forth with creative content.
The interns and externs actively participated in the experiential activities with dynamic inputs from the resource person and coordinator, Dr. Ashu Bharadwaj.

The workshop concluded with a Vote of Thanks, which was proposed by Prof. Nishat Sultan.
The event was meticulously organized by the organizing team comprising of Prof. Ashu Bhardwaj, Prof. Anuradha Sharma, Prof. Madhuri Sawai, Prof. Zeba Jafri, Prof. Nishat Sultan, Prof. Anupriya Wadhwa, Prof. Kirti Chawla and Dr Nupur Gupta under the guidance and support of the Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, JMI, Prof. Keya Sircar.
