Eid travellers suffer huge congestion on Highways and train delays in Bangladesh. Home bound travellers from Dhaka faced huge congestion on various highways and delays in train schedule on Saturday as large number of people are rushing from Dhaka to go home for the Eid-Ul-Azha festival on Monday.
Several kilometre long tailback was reported on the Dhaka-Tangail highway which stretched from the Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj to Tangail’s Mirzapur upazila.
Long que of vehicles is also reported on the highways near the ferry terminals, including Dhaka-Aricha one. The rail communication from Dhaka was affected on Saturday due to derailment of Khulna-bound Sundarban Express.
Trains departing from Dhaka were delayed for many hours causing huge rush at the railway station. Some trains reached Dhaka almost 12 hours behind schedule.
Air fares from Dhaka to other parts of the country have also been raised many times by the private airlines operating the services. The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called upon the government to investigate the matter.
Joint secretary general of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday criticised the government for mismanagement and poor condition of roads causing hardship to travellers. However, Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said there are no long tailbacks on highways, but vehicles are moving slowly due to cattle laden trucks.
