A significant milestone has been achieved under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana–IV (PMGSY–IV). Road projects covering more than 10,000 kilometres have been approved for the states and Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, further reinforcing the Department of Rural Development’s commitment to a developed India.
Stretching from remote hill regions to rural heartlands, these roads represent more than infrastructure development; they are vital pathways to progress, opening up new opportunities and promoting inclusive growth. The construction of these roads will provide connectivity and access to essential services to nearly 3,270 habitations that were previously isolated. It is estimated that by improving access to healthcare, education, and better livelihood opportunities, these roads will significantly transform rural life and strengthen the foundation of a developed India.
Under PMGSY–IV, as per the 2011 Census, connectivity is to be provided to unconnected habitations with a population of more than 500 in plain areas; more than 250 in North-Eastern and hilly states/Union Territories; more than 25 in special category areas (Scheduled Tribe areas under the Fifth Schedule, Aspirational Districts/Blocks, and desert areas); and more than 100 in Left Wing Extremism–affected districts.
The objective of the scheme is to provide all-weather road connectivity, spanning 62,500 kilometres, to habitations that are currently unconnected. The construction of necessary bridges will also be undertaken as part of the programme.
