Raipur, December 4, 2025 — The Bastar Olympic 2025 has emerged as a powerful platform for women across the region, enabling them to rediscover their sporting roots after years of household responsibilities. Among these inspiring participants is Saroj Podiam, who returned to the sports field after a long gap due to marriage and family duties. Despite being the mother of a three-year-old, she has become a symbol of determination for many.
Women Shine in Tug-of-War, Earn Ticket to Division-Level Competition
Saroj Podiam, a resident of remote Murliguda village in Konta block, recalls her school days of kho-kho and kabaddi, which the Bastar Olympic revived for her. She says most women spend their time managing households, children, and daily chores, leaving little room to pursue sports.
“The Bastar Olympic gave us a chance to showcase our talent again. Reaching the division level is a moment of great pride,” she said.
Saroj and her team delivered a strong performance in tug-of-war, securing their place in the division-level tournament. The achievement has brought immense joy to her family and the village. Saroj thanked Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for creating a platform where women could come forward and compete.
“This time, we will give our best to bring victory to our district. The Bastar Olympic gave us the courage to play again, and many women around us also joined in,” she added.
From Naxal-Affected Past to Sporting Triumph
Saroj’s journey is especially inspiring due to her family’s tragic past. Her family was affected by Maoist violence, and in 2009, her father-in-law was killed by Naxalites. The incident pushed the family into crisis.
The government later supported them under the Nava Bihan Yojana, providing housing in Sukma and appointing her husband, Rakesh, as a Nagar Sainik. Today, the same family that once struggled has created a new story of resilience through the Bastar Olympic.
Teamwork and Unity: The Strength Behind Success
Saroj credits her team’s unity and coordination for their achievement. Her team members include Nandita Sodhi, Sarita Podiyami, Lipika De, Munni Nag, Lalita Yadav, Poonam Bhekhar, Jaswanti Vetti, and Bandi Barse. Together, the women displayed remarkable teamwork that helped them advance to the next stage.
