In a heartwarming example of accessible healthcare innovation, the Integrated Liver Care (ILC) team at Aster CMI Hospital has brought a new lease of life to an 8-year-old boy from Raichur, Karnataka, suffering from advanced liver disease. The breakthrough came as part of ILC’s outreach clinic initiative, aimed at providing super-specialist clinical care to underserved rural populations.
The child, Santhosh, had been battling a severe, undiagnosed liver condition since infancy. Despite visiting multiple doctors across regions, including Hyderabad, his condition worsened, eventually resulting in liver failure. The family's financial limitations left them with few options—until the case was referred to Aster’s ILC team during a visit to Bijapur.
After evaluation, doctors diagnosed advanced cirrhosis and highlighted the urgent need for a liver transplant. Under the Affordable Liver Transplant Initiative—a joint effort by Aster CMI and ILC—the team raised ₹12.5 lakh to support the procedure. Santhosh’s mother volunteered to be a living donor, and in December 2018, the transplant was successfully performed.
Now, five months post-transplant, Santhosh is a healthy, playful child, back home in Raichur, marking a miraculous turnaround for the family.
