Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja Group and India’s largest bus manufacturer, has announced a significant order from Senbus Industries, a Dakar-based bus assembler, to supply 400 Eagle 916 Minibuses valued at €10.06 million. This follows the success of 475 Ashok Leyland buses already operational in Dakar under Dakar Dem Dikk, the Senegalese government’s transport agency.
Developed specifically for African road and terrain conditions, the Eagle 916 is a robust and efficient platform that offers Euro III-compliant inline pump technology, excellent fuel efficiency, and enhanced maneuverability. The buses have undergone extensive on-road trials with customers across Africa and have proven their reliability and profitability.
Deliveries are set to begin by end-June, with buses supporting AFTU, a key private bus association in Senegal that provides connectivity to remote and underserved regions.
Mr. Arijit Dutta Chowdhury, Vice President – Project & Defence Sales, International Operations, Ashok Leyland, said:
“We are proud to support Senegal’s efforts to enhance public mobility. This partnership with Senbus Industries marks a critical step in connecting rural areas with urban centers and promoting sustainable transport solutions. It’s a testament to Ashok Leyland’s commitment to empowering private transport operators and strengthening local assembly capabilities.”
As part of the agreement, the buses will be delivered in Semi Knocked Down (SKD) form, with local assembly to be handled by Senbus Industries in collaboration with Ashok Leyland engineers. A dedicated workshop facility in Dakar is also under development to provide aftersales service and technical support, ensuring long-term operational efficiency.
Ashok Leyland, currently ranked as the 4th largest bus manufacturer globally, continues to reinforce its leadership and expand its global footprint through such strategic international collaborations.
