Corruption within the revenue department surfaced once again on Tuesday afternoon when the Anti-Corruption Team arrested a lekhpal red-handed while accepting a ₹10,000 bribe at the Sadar Tehsil in Budaun, Uttar Pradesh.
The arrest created panic within the tehsil premises as officials moved swiftly to trap the accused revenue officer, identified as Mahendra Singh.
Bribe Sought for Property Inheritance Entry
According to officials, the lekhpal had been demanding money from a local resident in exchange for recording a legal inheritance (mutation) entry in revenue records.
The complainant, Durvesh, a resident of Gadaura village under Ujhani police station limits, stated that his father, Jai Prakash, had passed away recently. Following the death, the family land was required to be transferred to his name.
Despite making repeated visits to the lekhpal’s office for over a month, Durvesh alleged that the official deliberately delayed the process and clearly stated that the inheritance would be registered only after payment of ₹10,000.
“He told me plainly that inheritance entries are done for money, and without paying the amount, no work would move forward,” the complainant said.
Trap Laid at Tehsil Office
After being harassed for weeks, the complainant approached the Anti-Corruption Department, which verified the allegations and laid a trap.
On Tuesday afternoon, the lekhpal called the complainant to the Sadar Tehsil to collect the bribe. The anti-corruption team, already stationed at the location, caught the lekhpal red-handed while accepting the cash.
