Former champion Kidambi Srikanth and seasoned campaigner HS Prannoy leaned on experience to overcome younger rivals and book their places in the second round of men’s singles at the Yonex–Sunrise India Open 2026, a BWF World Tour Super 750 event organised by the Badminton Association of India (BAI). In women’s singles, Malvika Bansod progressed, while 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma caught the eye with a spirited fight against China’s second seed Wang Zhi Yi.
Key Highlights
Srikanth rallied from a game down to defeat compatriot Tharun M 15-21, 21-6, 21-19.
Prannoy beat last edition’s runner-up Lee Cheuk Yiu (Hong Kong) 22-20, 21-18.
Malvika Bansod edged past Pai Yu Po (Chinese Taipei) 21-18, 21-19 to enter Round Two.
Tanvi Sharma pushed Wang Zhi Yi for over an hour before losing 20-22, 21-18, 13-21.
PV Sindhu exited in Round One, losing to Nguyen Thuy Linh (Vietnam).
Match Notes
Prannoy, returning to Super 750 action after a tough 2025 season, maximised a late entry into the draw following Anders Antonsen’s withdrawal. Ranked 38, he showcased patience in long rallies and saved two game points in the opener. He will next face Loh Kean Yew (Singapore).
Srikanth, playing his first Super 750 since the Singapore Open in May 2025, found rhythm after a slow start. Trailing 17-19 in the decider, the former world No. 1 produced four straight points with sharp net play to seal the match in 53 minutes. He meets Christo Popov (France) in Round Two.
Tanvi Sharma, playing her maiden Super 750, underlined her promise with deft net play and composure, taking the second game against Wang. Fatigue, however, told in the decider.
