Azim Premji is trending after Azim Premji University suspended a student for two years following a controversy linked to a planned campus discussion on Kashmir that allegedly turned violent earlier this year.
According to reports, the university also issued written warnings to two other students after an internal inquiry into the February incident.
The controversy began when a discussion event on a sensitive Kashmir-related issue was reportedly cancelled after suspected activists linked to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) allegedly stormed the venue and vandalised the space.
The disciplinary action has now triggered protests on campus, with over 40 students gathering on Friday demanding revocation of the suspension order.
Student groups criticised the university’s decision to constitute a “Special Disciplinary Committee”, arguing that students were being penalised for violence allegedly carried out by outsiders.
In response, Azim Premji University defended its action, stating that a detailed inquiry had been conducted before disciplinary measures were taken.
A university spokesperson said the institution carried out a “thorough inquiry” and acted after reviewing the recommendations of the investigating committee.
