The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on the verge of a historic breakthrough in West Bengal, surging close to the 200-seat mark as counting trends continue to favour the party in the 2026 Assembly elections.
As of early afternoon trends, the BJP is leading in around 185 seats, well above the majority mark of 148 in the 294-member Assembly, while the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is trailing significantly with leads in about 90 seats.
Key Battle: Mamata vs Adhikari in Bhabanipur
In the high-stakes Bhabanipur constituency, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is currently leading after multiple rounds of counting, regaining ground against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.
The seat has witnessed a tight back-and-forth contest throughout the counting process, making it one of the most closely watched battles of the election.
BJP Eyes First-Ever Government in Bengal
If trends hold, the BJP is set to form its first government in West Bengal, marking a major political shift in a state where the TMC has been in power for the last 15 years.
The surge comes amid:
- Strong gains in north and rural Bengal
- Consolidation of new voter segments
- High voter turnout exceeding 90% in both phases
TMC Urges Caution, Calls Trends “Premature”
TMC leaders have termed the early trends “fishy” and urged party workers to remain vigilant until final results are declared.
In a message to supporters, Mamata Banerjee said:
“Do not lose heart, we will win after sundown.”
