Kolkata, May 4, 2026:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is heading towards a historic victory in West Bengal, leading in 193 out of 293 seats as counting continues for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.
The ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is trailing with 95 seats, while CPI(M) is leading in one seat and others in four. The majority mark in the 294-member Assembly is 148, placing BJP firmly on course to form its first-ever government in the state.
Mamata Leads, But TMC Stares at Defeat
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is leading from the Bhabanipur constituency against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, even as her party faces the prospect of losing power after 15 years in office.
Interestingly, Suvendu Adhikari is leading from Nandigram, maintaining his stronghold while also contesting the high-profile Bhabanipur seat.
Key Constituencies to Watch

- BJP’s Sarbari Mukherjee ahead in Jadavpur, a traditional Left stronghold
- BJP candidate Ratna Debnath, linked to the RG Kar case, leading from Panihati

These results indicate a broad-based surge for BJP across urban, semi-urban, and sensitive constituencies.

The election witnessed a record voter turnout of over 92%, the highest since Independence, reflecting intense political mobilisation.
Polling was conducted in two phases:

Repolling was held in select booths, while the Falta constituency will go for fresh polling later this month due to electoral irregularities.
