There are quite a few signs to look out for that your partner is cheating on you. You might be suspicious because of recent changes in their behavior, or they might simply have a history of messing around. Sometimes, your intuition says it all. But could you have ever imagined a person’s voice can give away the fact of infidelity.
A recent study conducted by Gleeden has shown how one could detect if someone had cheated just by listening to their voice.
According to a survey conducted in Evolutionary Psychology by an extramarital dating app Gleeden, some vocal and linguistic components can be signs that betray infidelity to your partner. In this study, voice pitch such that the lower voice pitch is perceived as indicating being more unfaithful.
The voice is a cheater detection tool and listening to how someone talks even if they are unknown could reveal whether they have been unfaithful, the study found. The men with deep voices are also rated by women as more likely to cheat on a partner and as less trustworthy in general. Women who judge men with low-pitched voices as more likely to deceive also prefer those men for short-term rather than long-term partners.
Researchers asked people to rate each voice sample of individuals for the likelihood the person had cheated. Interestingly, women were better at this task than men as they managed to better identify the cheaters than their male counterparts. Male speakers receive higher ratings for cheating, while female raters were in more probability to ascribe the likelihood to cheat to speakers.
Scientists also manipulated the pitch of voice samples and regardless speakers were still able to assess their infidelity. Researchers conducted the experiments on 64 men and 88 women where they examined whether certain voice-related characteristics were linked to cheating intentions in both adult men and women
In addition, the study also indicated that extroverts had greater voice quality and fewer silent pauses – all of which strongly predict infidelity. Researchers believe using voice to detect if a partner has been cheating may have important implications for mating success in evolutionary terms.
Hence, the study shows the non-verbal characteristics of the voices can play a crucial role in signalling potential infidelity. So, the next time you find yourself listening to and judging someone’s voice for such subtle cues, remember that they are judging yours, too.
