UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to unveil his final Brexit offer to the European Union today. The Downing Street, in a statement, said that Mr Johnson will give details of a “fair and reasonable compromise” in his closing speech to the annual conference of his ruling Conservative Party at Manchester today.
The statement stressed that this would be a “final offer” and that if the European Union does not engage with the proposal, Britain will not negotiate further and will leave on October 31. The EU is scheduled to hold a conference in Brussels on October 17 in a bid to secure a deal to avoid a potentially damaging no-deal Brexit.
With less than a month until Britain is due to leave the EU, the future of Brexit, the country’s biggest trade and foreign policy shift in more than 40 years, is uncertain. Mr Johnson has pledged to renegotiate the exit terms that former Prime Minister Theresa May agreed with Brussels, which legislators rejected thrice. He is focused on reworking the so-called backstop plan, which aims to keep open the border between British Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland. Ms May’s proposal would have kept Britain in an effective customs union with the EU, which many argue would force London to abide by the bloc’s rules indefinitely.
