Aster CMI Hospital Launches Stem Cell Donor Drive to Combat Blood Cancer in India
Aster CMI Hospital has launched a stem cell donor registration campaign to address the urgent need for donors for patients suffering from blood cancer and related disorders in India.
The initiative, supported by DATRI — India’s largest stem cell registry — invites both employees and the general public to register as potential donors, aiming to significantly expand the national donor pool.
Massive Gap Between Demand and Availability
India faces a critical shortage in stem cell donors:
- Only ~2,000 transplants are conducted annually
- 80,000–100,000 transplants are required each year
- Just ~4 lakh registered donors in India
As a result, the probability of finding a matching donor is only 10–15% in India, compared to 60–70% in Western countries.
For many patients, particularly those diagnosed with blood cancers such as Leukemia, a stem cell transplant remains the only curative option.
Breaking Myths Around Stem Cell Donation
A key objective of the campaign is to address widespread misconceptions about stem cell donation.
Contrary to popular belief:
- Registration requires only a simple cheek swab
- The process is safe, minimally invasive, and causes negligible discomfort
- Donation does not deplete energy levels
How to Register
The donor registration process is simple:
- Fill out a registration and consent form
- Provide a cheek swab sample
- Sample is tested for HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) typing
- Donor is added to the registry until the age of 60
A successful transplant requires a close HLA match between donor and patient, which is often difficult—even among siblings, where the match probability is only around 30%.
