Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in New York today. He will also have meetings with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
On the sidelines of the 74th UNGA session, the Prime Minister met 14 leaders from the Caribbean islands at the first CARICOM-India Summit. The 14 Leaders from the Caribbean Community and Common Market, CARICOM including Guyana Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago attended the meeting.
The Prime Minister said the meeting was aimed at deepening cooperation to tackle issues like climate change. The Prime Minister also held fruitful discussions with his counterparts from Belgium, New Zealand, Armenia and Estonia. These high level meetings are part of India’s move to create a common ground on global issues.
Briefing the media, MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said Mr Modi’s meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was the first after Christchurch attacks. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar held talks with his counterparts from G4 nations. The leaders sought early and comprehensive reform of the UN. They were hopeful reforms will be ushered soon despite constraints in the current session.
The External Affairs Minister also met leaders from various countries, including China, Kuwait and Belarus. He also held talks with the leaders from the Gulf co-operation Council, GCC.
Talking to media at Council Foreign Relations Programme on foreign relations, S. Jaishankar targeted Pakistan, saying no where in the world a country patronises terrorism in the form of industry like Pakistan does.
