A Rank Panel Ceremony was organized by the National Cadet Corps (NCC), Navy Wing of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on 13th May, 2025 at the university’s Yasser Arafat Hall. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Mazhar Asif, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia. Captain (IN) Nalin Kant Mishra, Commanding Officer of 2 Delhi Naval Unit was present in the capacity of Chief Guest along with Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar, JMI who graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Hony. Coordinator NCC, Prof. Iqtidar Mohd Khan, Associate NCC Officer, SD Navy Sub Lieutenant (Dr.) Arif Mohammad, and Prof. Neelofar Afzal, DSW were also present along with other ANOs and PI staff.
Upon arrival of Prof. Mazhar Asif, VC JMI, the CO 2DNU Captain (IN) Nalin Kant Mishra and the Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, a quarter guard of honor as given to the guests by the SD/SW Navy Wing Cadets of JMI. As per Jamia tradition, the formal commencement of the programme began with the recitation of a verse from the Holy Qur’an by Cdt. Ramsha which was followed by the rendition of Jamia’s Tarana by the NCC Cadets -LC Zoya Rizvi and LC Tanvi.
In his welcome speech, Prof. Iqtidar Mohd Khan, Hony. NCC Coordinator, JMI discussed the history of NCC JMI and its contribution towards nation-building.
A travelogue (short-film) comprising of the NCC JMI activities was exhibited to the guests to highlight its significance and contribution. After that, Ex-Cadet Captain Md. Alamgir was called upon to share his experience with the junior cadets. He profusely praised the JMI and ANO for their contributions in helping him successfully complete his tenure in JMI as Cadet Captain making a special mention of how the Rank of CC helped him build his personality and leadership skills.
Further, the names of cadets of SD/SW Navy Wing were called for the Rank ceremony- where Ranji Tripathi was given the rank of Cadet Captain, Shahmeera Ansari was given the rank of Cadet Adjutant, Abraz Ali and Arfa Ruhi were given the rank of Petty Officer Cadets, followed by Suraj Bohara, Tejas Raina, Zoya Rizvi and Tanvi were given the ranks of Leading Cadet.
The new Cadet Captain, Ramji Tripathi, thanked the CO 2 DNU, VC and Registrar, JMI and ANO for the faith they reposed in him promising that he will do his best to serve the NCC.
In his address, the Chief Guest of the event, Captain (IN) Nalin Kant Mishra, Commanding Officer, 2 Delhi Naval Unit congratulated the administrative staff of JMI and thanked the Jamia fraternity for providing them with a firing range and other necessary services, whenever needed. He also emphasized the importance of NCC cadets in nation-building. He said NCC training is not just about learning new skills; it is about developing the character, discipline, and leadership qualities that will help the cadets to serve the county in a better and productive manner. The values of teamwork, patriotism, and service to the nation that Cadets learn through NCC stay with them forever, he added. He also spoke about the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister to make India a developed country by 2047, and the role that NCC cadets can play in the accomplishment of this goal.
In his address, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi said that he was also enrolled with the NCC during his AMU days and that he held a NCC C certificate. Highlighting the importance of youth in nation building, Prof Rizvi said the cadets are a second line of defense and therefore, it was important that the youth of the country join the NCC. He also acknowledged the outstanding achievements of JMI cadets who were being awarded various ranks. He said that their dedication and perseverance were truly inspiring, and expressed confidence that they would make a positive impact in their communities and beyond, given that the NCC plays a vital role in nation-building by developing responsible citizens and future leaders. Through various national initiatives and community service activities, NCC cadets contribute to the betterment of society and promote national unity and integrity, Prof Rizvi said.
In his presidential address, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif congratulated the cadets who had been awarded ranks on the significant occasion. He also said that it was due to their hard work, dedication, and commitment to the NCC that they had been awarded with ranks. He also highlighted that JMI has a rich tradition of nurturing young talents and promoting national service. He said that Jamia’s NCC had been instrumental in shaping the character and leadership qualities of the university’s students. Through the NCC programme, cadets have developed valuable skills such as leadership, teamwork, and discipline, which will serve them well throughout their lives, Prof Asif added. “These skills will benefit cadets in all aspects of their lives, whether they pursue a career in the Armed Forces, civil services, or any other field,” Prof Asif said. He also expressed his gratitude to the guests, coordinator NCC, JMI, ANOs, and the staff members for their support and guidance. His final advice to the cadets was “never stop learning, never stop growing, and never stop striving for excellence”.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Sub Lieutenant (Dr.) Arif Mohammad who congratulated the new rank panel and reminded them that the ranks bestowed on them differentiated them from being ‘just cadets’ to being ‘cadets with additional responsibilities’ such they have to be careful in all their future conduct. Further, he presented his gratitude and thanked the valued guests for gracing the function. The programme ended with the NCC song followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
