The Faculty of Engineering & Technology (FET), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) instituted FET-JMI Research Awards 2024, for the first time, to recognize the contributions of the Faculty members in Research. The awards are in 3 categories, Research Publications in SCI journals, Patents awarded and Sponsored Research projects, conceptualized by the Dean Prof. Mini Shaji Thomas as an encouragement to appreciate the contributions of the best researchers of the Faculty. The FET Research Awards for 2024 were distributed by the Hon’ble Vice- Chancellor JMI, Prof. Mazhar Asif, to Dr. Musheer Ahmad of Computer Engineering for research publications, Dr. Abid Ali Khan of Civil Engineering for sponsored research project, Prof. Sajad A. Loan of Electronics & Communication Engineering and Prof. Munna Khan of Electrical Engineering received the research award for patents.
The Vice Chancellor also felicitated 7 faculty members of FET for getting listed among the world’s top 2% scientists. Felicitation was for the research credentials of year 2023 published in Sept 2024. The said list, of world’s top 2% scientists, is curated by Meta Center Stanford University USA, and is published by Elsevier every year. Faculty members, who were felicitated at the function were Prof. Abid Haleem, Dr. Mohd. Javaid and Prof. Arshad Noor Siddiqee of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Ahteshamul Huque and Prof. Tarikul Islam of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Musheer Ahmad of Computer Engineering and Dr. Faheem Ahmad of Applied Sciences and Humanities.
The Vice Chancellor highlighted the need for the Faculty to do grassroot research/innovation and recycling, as was done in the self-sustaining villages of India.
The Dean Prof. Mini Thomas highlighted the potential of the Faculty to excel, and requested the intervention of the Vice Chancellor in recruiting more regular Faculty and staff, more space requirements in the wake of the new B Tech and M Tech programs started this year, and efforts to improve the perception of the Faculty, with FET celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2025.
Prof. Ikbal Ali, convener of Sponsored Research Coordination Committee of Faculty of Engineering and Technology, highlighted the positive impact of instituting the Research Awards at the faculty level by the present Dean of the faculty of Engineering, Prof. Mini S. Thomas. He thanked the Dean FET and appreciated the initiatives taken by the Dean FET for recognizing and appreciating the peer’s achievements, motivating as well as developing a culture of collaborative and sponsored research.
The event also witnessed the valedictory ceremony of Crescentia – Sports Fest 2k24-25. Prof. Shabana Mehfuz, Coordinator of the Sports Committee of the Faculty apprised the audience with the details of the month long Sports Fest where six teams from various Departments took part in tournaments for Outdoor and Indoor games like Cricket, Football, Volleyball, BasketBall, Badminton (Men & Women) , Table Tennis (Men & Women) and Athletics-100m, 200m (Men & Women). The team selection for all the Departments was carried out by the Student’s Sports Council, with Mohd. Waseem as the President, via trials before the commencement of the fest. This year, the registration of students for various games was around 800. The trophies and medals for the various games were distributed to the winner and runners up teams and individual athletes by the Prof Mini S. Thomas, Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology and the Heads of the various Departments. This year the overall Sports Fest winner trophy was bagged by the Department of Civil Engineering.
