The Valedictory Function of the 19th (Online) Refresher Course in Geography & Environmental Studies with the theme ‘Sustainable Development and Environmental Management’ was organized jointly by the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre(UGC-HRDC) and the Department of Geography of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on 1st February 2022. The two-week refresher course was started on 18th January,2022. The Chief Guest of the Valedictory function was Prof. S.P. Singh, Principal, St. John’s College, Agra. Prof. Singh appreciated the relevance of the course theme and congratulated all the participants for successfully completing the program.
Special Guest of the Valedictory Function was Prof. Geeta Bhatt, Director, Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB), University of Delhi. Prof. Bhatt emphasized upon India’s need for greater investment in the higher education in order to secure creative, well-trained and educated skilled human resource and experience smooth transition towards super economic power in the 21st century. Prof. Bhatt also appreciated the New Education Policy-2020 that duly focus on skilled-based, human-value oriented and context specific learning process, preferably in the regional languages in the country.
The Guest of Honor of the Valedictory Function were Prof. Rana P.B. Singh (BHU) and Prof. K.S. Sohal, Punjabi University, Patiala. Prof. Rana P.B. Singh focussed eco-literacy and culture of awakening among the youth. Prof. Sohal called upon greater need for sustainable lifestyle and efficient utilization for agriculture, food and water resources. The welcome address at the Valedictory Function was delivered by Prof. Anisur Rahman, Director, UGC-HRDC, JMI. Prof. Rahman congratulated all the participants for successfully completing the program and extended best wishes for the future academic and research endeavours. Feedback of the participants were shared by Dr. Dhruheen Chakraborty, Dr. Prashant Patil, Dr. Swarnima Singh and Dr. Anjali Dutta.
A brief report of the refresher course was presented by Dr. Praveen Kumar Pathak, Coordinator of the 19th RC in Geography & Environmental Studies. Overall, 40 invited lectures by the resource persons related to selected themes of sustainability and environmental managements were organized from reputed national and international research institutions including International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Vienna, Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research , Berlin, Tel Aviv University, Hokkaido University, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIPS-Mumbai, JNU, Delhi School of Economics, JMI, AMU, BHU, University of Pune, University of Allahabad etc.Chair remarks were presented by Prof. Mary Tahir, Head, Department of Geography, JMI. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Asif, Department of Geography, JMI. The Valedictory function was anchored by Ms. Vedika Maheswari, PhD scholar, Department of Geography, JMI.
