New Delhi, February 21: The Department of Psychology, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) hosted an online lecture by Prof. Monique Pfaltz from the Mid Sweden University on the topic “Assessing Socio-Emotional Consequences of Trauma Across Cultures” on 20th February 2024. Welcoming the speaker, the Head of the Department, Prof. Sheema Aleem said that the Department has initiated this series of distinguished lectures by eminent personalities. Students and faculty members would greatly benefit from this interaction with distinguished psychologists from around the globe.
The speaker highlighted the consequences of childhood maltreatment, with a particular focus on abuse and neglect, highlighting relevant research. The lecture commenced with an exploration of the concept of child maltreatment, followed by methodologies to study the phenomenon and interventions aimed at strengthening the mental health of individuals with experiences of trauma. Limitations and future directions were discussed in the concluding section to ensure the continued advancement of knowledge in this field.
Intrigued by Prof. Pfaltz’s insightful research, students actively engaged with her, posing several pertinent questions. These inquiries ranged from the feasibility of conducting research in collectivistic societies to exploring trauma-prone regions such as the Israel-Palestine conflict zone. The closing remarks were given by Prof Naved Iqbal, who, while thanking Prof. Monique Pfaltz said that the department looks forward to continued collaboration with professors domestically and internationally to enrich students’ knowledge in the field of psychology.
