The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences (CIRBSc), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), organized BIOPHYSIKA-2026: “National Conference on "Recent Advancements in Biophysics and Allied Sciences” on February 11, 2026, bringing together experts and scholars in the field to discuss the advancements in biophysics and its allied sciences.
Professor Rajan Patel, Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences (CIRBSc), extended a ceremonious welcome to the distinguished dignitaries, faculty members, eminent delegates, aspiring scholars, and all others assembled on the august occasion. In his remarks, he highlighted the pivotal role of the Centre in augmenting the institutional prestige of the university, particularly through its substantive contributions to the enhancement of national and international rankings. He acknowledged the dynamic support of the Honourable Vice Chancellor, JMI, Prof. Mazhar Asif, and the Registrar, JMI, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, to the Centre.
Professor Zahid Ashraf, the Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, offered incisive observations on the critical necessity of interdisciplinary scientific research. He observed that such integrative methodologies have increasingly transcended traditional disciplinary confines, thereby asserting themselves as indispensable frameworks for addressing and mitigating the complex, interwoven challenges. Professor Tanuja, Dean of Academic Affairs, accentuated the cardinal importance of experiential and practice-oriented training in the advancement of research. She expressed confidence that the conference would serve as a valuable platform for developing participants' skills and preparing them for future research challenges.
Professor Rizvi, Registrar of JMI, in his address exhorted students to actively engage in co‑curricular pursuits, underscoring their formative role in holistic development. He further emphasized that the judicious and profitable application of scientific knowledge constitutes a vital prerequisite for societal advancement and enduring progress.
Professor Manisha Sharma, Director of IIIT Sonepat, graced the conference as its Chief Guest and delivered discerning reflections on the overarching significance of science in ameliorating the conditions of human life. She particularly emphasized the pivotal role of physics within the broader domain of the life sciences and delineated its indispensable contributions to the specialized field of biophysics.
Mr. Mohammad Ameel, World Health Organization, SEARO, was the guest of honor. He emphasized the importance of funding in research. Concluding the inaugural session, Prof. Fareeda Athar, convener, delivered the vote of thanks.
The inaugural session was followed by four technical sessions with invited talks and oral and poster presentations by delegates. Various scientists from ICGEB, Delhi; Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi; University of Delhi, Delhi; AIIMS, Delhi; and the Department of Science and Technology, Delhi, enriched the conference with science, technology, and cutting-edge research in the field of biophysics. The conference was attended by more than 300 delegates from various parts of the country. More than 100 abstracts were published in the proceedings, which were presented as posters and oral talks in the afternoon. Various poster and oral talk awards were distributed in the valedictory session.
Throughout the proceedings of the various technical sessions, a series of lead lectures were delivered by eminent scientists whose scholarly expositions significantly enriched the intellectual fabric of the conference. These lectures encompassed a wide spectrum of contemporary scientific themes, ranging from foundational theoretical advances to applied interdisciplinary innovations. Prof. (Dr.) Dr. Shamsh Yazdani, in his lecture, explained the importance of Synthetic and Systems Biology Approaches in drug designing.
Another lead lecture was given by Prof. Sharmistha Dey, Department of Biophysics, AIIMS, on blood-based biomarkers and therapeutics of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Rajkumar Joshi, Scientist DST, emphasized writing scientific proposals. Prof. Nirala Ramchiary, Dr. Jaydeep Bhattacharya, Prof. Kedar Singh, Professor Indrajit Roy and Dr. Pannuru Venkatesu present excellent talks in the field of biophysical sciences. The one-day national conference concluded with a valedictory session that was graced, among others, by Prof. Zahid Ashraf, Dean of Life Sciences; Prof. Tanuja Singh, Dean of Academic Affairs; Prof. Rajan Patel, Director of CIRBSc; and Prof. Asimul Islam, co-convener of the conference.
